New Release: Amy Cutler - 'the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants' (CVC021) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Amy Cutler
the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants
(CVC021)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes and digital download

Crow Versus Crow is honoured to present the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants, a new body of work from polymath artist and educator Dr Amy Cutler, available as a limited-edition of fifty cassettes and near-infinite digital download from Friday 14th May 2021.

These recordings spring from a strange medieval English riddle, the Harley lyric, Erthe toc of erthe:

Erthe toc of erthe erthe wyth woh; Erthe other erthe to the erthe droh; Erthe leyde erthe in erthene throh; Tho hevede erthe of erthe erthe ynoh.

(Ms. Harley 2553).

The tiny lament or puzzle is impossible to translate, since in its four short lines the word earth appears twelve times. Like ‘ashes to ashes, dust to dust’, these identical words have different meanings – transitioning between soil, world, burial, cultivation, decay, earthly possessions, and our own bodies. The device of repeating earth so many times in such a short space creates an unsolvable lyric which, riddle-like, ‘only makes sense when we are prepared to hold several meanings of the word in our minds simultaneously’. How does one sing this tiny piece, or give it a tune?

This is an album of sonic variants, settings, and radio covers of Erthe toc of erthe, including those by invited guest artists and friends, Ecka Mordecai, Layla Legard (Hawthonn), Ceylan Hey (Bell Lungs, Mark S. Williamson (Spaceship) and Drew Mulholland. The modified field recordings, chants, twilight hums, nonsense riddles and layered repetitions are each inspired by the variant meanings of ‘earth’, in the ultimate group sonic field trip.

Cutler’s recordings were made in Luds Church, a naturally resonant mossy chasm in Staffordshire where Lollard ceremonies were held, including their alternative death chants. Combining guitar, voice, processed electronics, record hiss, and field recordings, these tracks (and the album as a whole) are each titled with phrases from the dictionary definitions of ‘earth’. Some of these meanings are undigestible by each other, whether scientific, metaphorical, or allegorical: e.g., the ground as a surface on which humans and animals move; the inhabitants of the world collectively; ‘earthing’ a conductive electrical circuit or terminal; to ‘go to earth’ meaning to take refuge as in an animal’s lair or burrow. Combining this mix of opposites – doom and refuge, sin and innocence – and playing on the end of the world-ness of elegy, this camper-van tape release becomes a sort of muted lullaby for earth itself.

the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants is released as a limited-edition of 50 hand-numbered, professionally dubbed C70 cassettes (made from recycled materials) and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp. The cassette features full-colour artwork by Crow Versus Crow and Dr Amy Cutler.

Tape -  £8

Download - Name Your Price. All proceeds from digital sales will be split between Crow Versus Crow, and will directly (and solely) fund future releases, and the artist.

New Release: Shit Creek - The Land Of The Remember (CVC016) Limited Edition of 50 CD-Rs & Digital Download

Shit Creek
The Land Of The Remember
(CVC016)
Limited Edition of 50 CD-Rs & digital download

Crow Versus Crow is delighted to present for public absorption a new body of supra-spectral, barely-contained-by-the-medium-of-sound works from Shit Creek, titled, The Land Of The Remember.

It can be difficult to make music about anything other than clinical depression when you're clinically depressed. Similarly, it can be difficult to imagine a reality beyond our own when the one we find ourselves in is so thoroughly depressing. Recorded between October and December 2019, in the midst of the General Election and the dismal sham masquerading as political discourse, The Land of the Remember could be seen as an attempt to forge an alternative - free from the restrictions of stifling oppression and dehumanising, debilitating structures of the contemporary UK.

Jamming the emotive tranquillity of the raga against a glittering technicolour that glitch-flips between atomising anxiety and absolute joy, The Land Of The Remember is an attempt to create the sound of a world beyond, or perhaps reconfigured from, the current socio-political context.

With no beat to anchor, the layers of granular fizz, squelching tropicalia glimmers and discordant plucked whatevers form shifting, expansive plains of multifarious sound, in a psychedelic bricolage of transcendental reconstitutions of the everyday.

The Land Of The Remember is released as a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered CD-Rs and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp on Friday 27th March 2020. The physical version is presented as a full-colour thermal printed CD-R, housed in a folded recycled card sleeve, with full colour artwork by Crow Versus Crow

'SUN FLOW ER - Works on Paper (2018 - 2019) by Andrew Wild' Now Available

SUN FLOW ER
(Works on Paper 2018 - 2019)
by Andrew Wild

A5 48pp full colour mini book printed on 140gsm silk paper with 300gsm recycled card cover. Limited edition of 50 hand-numbered copies

Available now via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

SUN FLOW ER is a collection of lo-fi reproductions of works on paper by Andrew Wild, produced during 2018 and 2019.

The process of making these works was essentially that of sketching - of intellectually forming and physically manifesting ideas through direct manipulation of materials - and were made parallel to larger works on canvas. Many of the main ideas and themes within these works on canvas (a more deliberate, conscious self-reflection; personal histories; ideas of Place; class-consciousness and socioeconomic context, and their intertwining with a sense of Self...) first found their physical form through these works on paper.

Some works contain elements of drawings and texts by Robert Ridley-Shackleton. These were made with the intention of being used as part of the artwork for RRS’ Stone Cold Crazy cassette, released via the Crow Versus Crow label in October 2018. All hail the Cardboard Prince!

SUN FLOW ER is published in an edition of 50 copies by Crow Versus Crow.

All original versions of the works reproduced within SUN FLOW ER are available for purchase. For prices and further enquiries, please email crow_versus_crow@hotmail.co.uk.

New Release: Chlorine - Gallooner (CVC013) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Chlorine
Gallooner
(CVC013)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes & digital download

Crow Versus Crow is honored to be able to present to you Gallooner, by Chlorine – alias of thee mighty Gateshead-based artist and multi-instrumentalist, Graeme Hopper. Following last year’s Loser Herd, released on the Panarus Productions label, Gallooner, digs deeper into the artist’s psyche to construct heavily layered and complex sonic evocations and excavations of the artist’s Self. It is by far the most personal collection of recordings Chlorine has produced to date.

Anxiety. Loneliness. Self-Loathing. Depression.

All hewn crude in catharsis.

That is not to say that Gallooner is a violent, nihilistic, ugly record. As with many creative expressions of melancholy, there is a deep, complicated beauty within the intricate soundscapes. It’s probably a hopeful record. But its seeds are sown deep in frustration and doubt.

Gall.

Bitterness. Bile. Audacity.
A skin sore caused by chronic irritation.
Brazen boldness coupled with impudent assurance and insolence.
Flaw.

And doubt.

With Gallooner, Chlorine has produced six varied yet cohesive soundscapes that range from throbbing, percussive, post-Dub, post-Industrial, post-Techno, sunk ravers, to heavily textured string-scraping, tape-hissing evocations of nocturnal wanderings, both dreamlike and concrete. Found sounds and field recordings coalesce with keys, strings and percussion to form intricate compositions rich in a symbiotic sense of geographic and psychological place.

Gallooner is released as a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered professionally dubbed cassettes and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp on Friday 12th July 2019, featuring artwork by Hopper.

New Release: Posset/Ulyatt - A Jar Full (CVC012) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Posset/Ulyatt
A Jar Full
(CVC012)
Limited Edition of 70 cassettes and digital download

Crow Versus Crow is honoured to be able to present, A Jar Full, the first set of collaborative recordings from improvising cell0-wranger, Charlie Ulyatt and Dictaphonic tape-jaxxer, Joe Posset.

Charlie and Joe became aware of each other’s work via mentions in the excellent TQ fanzine. When Joe was offered a show in Charlie’s hometown of Nottingham, he asked Charlie along to play a one-off collaboration.

(Improvising cello versus improvising Dictaphone; what could possibly go wrong?!)

Meeting for the first time a few hours before the show, with no previous rehearsal, practice or jam, things seemed to go rather well (CVC ed. - read: ‘blisteringly excellently’). It is this first ever show in Nottingham’s Angel pub that graces Side Two.

With a side of live dicta/cello wonk in the bag, Charlie and Joe spent a few weeks sending sound files back and forth to improvise over. What you hear on Side One is first-take improvisations over each other’s recordings. To keep things fresh, they agreed to not listen in advance but simply set up the recorder, hit play and record the outcome.

(But what will you hear?)

The rich tone of the cello slinks out between gobby horsehair friction and thumb-wrinked ffw action, speedy-jump cuts of smeared tape noise wrestle the gristle of fat wound strings. Sensory grenades explode letting out wafts of classy rosin and hot melting Bakelite. Thoughts and images coalesce into plump wobbling shapes until they are speared with a sharp sonic jab only to deflate with the dignity of a fainting dowager. Cello and Dictaphone flatter each other with audio-compliments and certainly make a handsome pair. The low tones afforded by resonating wood play off the fragile tape magnetics. The scribble-scrabble of the bow lends texture to the foggy Dictaphonix. Two distinct voices singing in drunken unison!

A Jar Full is released as a Limited Edition of 70 professionally-dubbed full-colour on-body printed cassettes, with artwork by Crow Versus Crow full-colour printed onto a hand-numbered j-card, housed in a white-backed cassette case. A digital download is also available.

New Release: Caught In The Wake Forever & glacis - Version & Delineation (CVC009) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Caught In The Wake Forever & glacis
Version & Delineation
(CVC009)
Limited Edition cassette & digital download

Perhaps appropriately, as autumn rolls in, Crow Versus Crow proudly presents, Version & Delineation, the first collaborative work from Caught In The Wake Forever and glacis.

Having individually released highly acclaimed records on such esteemed labels as Hibernate, Fluid Audio, Soft Corridor and Dronarivm, Version & Delineation sees Caught In The Wake Forever and glacis, working aliases of Fraser McGowan and Euan Millar-McMeeken respectively, deconstructing and expanding upon Neo-Classical and Ambient templates to produce a body of work that revolves around improvisation (with a small ‘I’) and noise (with a small ‘N’).

These six short works hinge upon glacis’ raw piano improvisations, recorded, without prior planning or subsequent revision, straight to IPhone Voice Memo software. That is not to say there is a flippancy to these recordings. Rather, they are considered, concentrated distillations of reflected emotional experience. precise and lyrical.

In response, Caught In The Wake Forever produced beds of glitching, warbled, heavily textured sound that lay in dialogue with the piano works. Using the Make Noise System Cartesian & Akai S20 Sampler to incorporate culled and processed snapshots of domestic minutiae, Caught In The Wake Forever’s intricate abstract compositions mirror the fragility and transient ephemerality of glacis’ piano pieces.

Porya Hatami is responsible for the beautiful mastering of this record, which perfectly realises the intricacy and textural complexity of the compositions.

Version & Delineation is released as a Limited Edition of 100 professionally duplicated glitter-shell cassettes, housed in a standard plastic case with tracing paper J-card, held inside a recycled card O-card sleeve. Each cassette is hand numbered. All artwork and design by Crow Versus Crow.

New Release: Alocasia Garden - Colony (Crow Versus Crow, 2017)

Alocasia Garden
Colony
Crow Versus Crow
(CVC005)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes & digital download

Order now via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

Crow Versus Crow is incredibly proud to present Colony, the latest release from Alocasia Garden, alias of Folkstone (UK) -based experimental artist Reece Thomas Green.

Startlingly prolific, Colony is Alocasia Garden’s 20th full-length release since the project’s inception in 2014 - following previous cassettes on such esteemed labels as Sacred Tapes, Vanity Pill and Strange Rules.

Written and recorded in June 2016, using contact mics, ride symbol, synth and two 4-track tape recorders, Colony expands upon an established, highly personal aesthetic, specifically exploring more confrontational, harsher textures in stark contrast to experimentations with more open, spacious elements within the delicately layered compositions.

Rooted in the historical lineage of Industrial Noise music, yet eschewing any associated machismo and posturing, with Alocasia Garden, Reece Thomas Green manages to deftly imbue his textured, almost tactile, compositions with a sense of poignancy – a highly emotive, intrinsically human expression extracted from the most inhuman of sources. Piercing screeches and anthropomorphic feedback snarls give way to sustained tones, echoing fizzes and flowing mechanical gurgles, coagulating to evoke dystopian landscapes; battered, collapsed but not hopeless.

Colony is released as a limited edition of 50 professionally dubbed white-shelled cassettes, with full colour labels, wrapped in a full colour extended j-card, housed in a clear plastic case, and digital download.

NEW RELEASE: BBBlood, Posset & Stuart Chalmers - 'delirium cutlet impaste' (Crow Versus Crow Editions)

BBBlood, Posset & Stuart Chalmers
delirium cutlet impaste
Limited edition of 50 CD-Rs and download
Available from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp Friday 14th April 2017

Whether wielding Dictaphone, mobile phone or zither, Posset, BBBlood and Stuart Chalmers, three pillars of the No-Audience Underground, have honed their respective craft over a number of years and an even larger number of innovative and pioneering recordings, released through such esteemed DIY labels as Chocolate Monk, Strange Rules, Singing Knives, Beartown Records, KIKS/Girlfriend, Invisible City, Was Ist Das?... The list goes on!

So, it is an absolute pleasure for Crow Versus Crow to be able to present, Delirium Cutlet Impaste; a three-track three-way split, with BBBlood, Posset and Stuart Chalmers each offering their own slab of rich, evocative, alchemical tape music.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste is a record made from within the socio-political mindfuck that is the UK in 2017.

…The prevalence of so-called ‘alt-right’ (read: fascist) politics; deepening social divisions; an increasingly retrospective, nostalgia-yearning for an England that couldn’t, shouldn’t and, almost certainly, never did exist; a building of cultural walls to the exclusion of various/any cultural others…

This is the climate within which this record has been made.

Yet, this record isn’t a reactionary, condensable to a soundbite, statement piece. It is an open, complex maelstrom of layers of sounds and ideas

…domesticity; poetics in the minutiae of the mundane; field recordings of European excursion; the sounds of various non-Western musics, processed and subsumed; the body as instrument, as conduit…

This record reflects an open-armed engagement with a shifting, tumultuous, uncertain contemporary world. It is a raw, joyful expression of the creative process in, and in spite of, the environment from which it is born.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste will be available from Friday 14th April 2017 as a limited edition of 50 CD-Rs, housed in a full-colour 300gsm ‘greeting card’ sleeve, featuring a collaborative collage produced by BBBlood, Posset, Stuart Chalmers and Crow Versus Crow, in a hand-stamped, numbered and sticker-sealed envelope, and download from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp.

Grey Guides - Beast Mask Supremacist (CVC003)

It's an absolute pleasure to be able to present you with Grey Guides' Beast Mask Supremacist, available as a limited edition cassette and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp.

Available as an edition of 50 cassettes, Beast Mask Supremacist is the third release from Leeds-based duo, Grey Guides, following two self-released CDRs, Back to Mucus and Songs from Grüppen Aleph-Aleph.

With Beast Mask Supremacist, the duo of Lynden St. John (vocals, tapes) and Matt Hurricane-Salt (guitar), accompanied by the presence of spiritual mediator Hogan, disseminate decrepit fragments of an abstract, non-linear narrative revolving around a cast of elusory characters perceptible only on the periphery of consciousness; Glimmers of structures emerge with a sense of uncanny familiarity from the ritualistic drone and ecstatic din, before becoming submerged once again within the complex void; Subliminal transmissions soaked in layers of whirling hiss and magnetic skree. A Burroughsian séance.

'The music staggers along bathed in hiss, echo, and garbled voices, sounding like aging tape recordings of a ritual or séance reassembled into chilling noise transmissions. This music creeps under your skin and deep into the recesses of consciousness. The titles are ace to boot, e.g. ‘Just Burned Down a Care Home’, or ‘Yoo Doo Rite’.'

Spool's Out

'Tuned into the Fortean Times this duo’s reification cacophony of subliminal and subconscious entities – messages from the damned and inter-dimensional – is a most unnerving soundtrack. Imbued in part by early Throbbing Gristle, Blood Stereo, and of course the archdeacon of strange macabre and strung-out visions, William Burroughs, Beast Mask Supremacist is an imaginary (we hope) field recording expedition beyond the ether. Whether they got out alive remains questionable; the found remnants sounding like a battle between complete immersion and total destruction.'

Monolith Cocktail

'Now this well might out weird even those impish chaps the truth about frank in terms of sonic hi-jinks that messes with your head...truly an unnerving and uneasy listening experience all squirelling tape manipulations, hissing howls, white noise terrorphonics and er – primitive chanting and something which we’d have to say and admire, features among the mayhem and melee some of the finest blood lusting wolf howls we’ve heard on a platter since UK Decay’s ‘rising from the dread’. Approach with due care.'

'Listening Fictions' by Sindre Bjerga

Listening Fictions by Sindre Bjerga

Now available in a single limited edition of 50 copies via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

I'm incredibly pleased to be able to announce the release of another addition to the on-going series of Crow Versus Crow limited editions, Listening Fictions by Sindre Bjerga.

Here's a little information on the release:

Listening Fictions presents two live sets taken from Sindre Bjerga's 2014 tour of South Korea, recorded at So Zac's Cafe and Sound Mind on the 3rd and 9th July, respectively.

Presented side by side, and detached from the intrinsic visual aspect of the performances, these two recordings sit in dialogue, cyclical and repetitive; flowing ghosts of each other. Simultaneously familiar yet distant, sounds swell from within the dense collage of 'kitchen sink' psychedelic drones, magnetic tape hiss and scree, and culled found sounds.

Sindre Bjerga is a Norwegian artist who has previously released records on labels including Blackest Rainbow, Chocolate Monk, Matching Head and Gold Soundz. He also records and releases works collaboratively as part of Star Turbine, A Vibrant Struggle and the Bjerga / Iverson duo, amongst other collectives.

Listening Fictions is presented as a full colour printed CDR mounted inside a 15 x 30 cm 300gsm folded gloss card, featuring full colour printed art work by Crow Versus Crow. The card is then housed within a hand-stamped, sticker sealed, individually numbered envelope. This is a single Limited Edition of 50 copies and won't be re-pressed. A digital version is also available
