Crow Versus Crow is delighted to present for your aural-spiritual consumption ‘Elvis Died and Everyone Is…’, from high-priest of vox-mung dicta-jaxx, Posset. Two threads of ‘vocals’ and ‘tape’ seem to run through much Posset’s work, each often abstracted to pure texture, to pure concrete, each overlapping and blurring the others’ boundaries. Elvis Died and Everyone Is… further pushes these threads, weaving absurdist skit, deep croak throat drone, sludged free verse, layers of clipped skittering utterances, and writhing whorls of golden dicta scree into a fevered patchwork of dreamy hiss and fluttering treble.

“For fans of losing your train of thought in an important conversation, de-tuned longwave radio stations, fake Electronic Voice Phenomena, half-formed words dissolving on the tongue, lethargy, being too hot and itchy in an unfamiliar building, the intimate electric breath of damaged heater, overheard conversations on the bus, that faint tinkle, a relaxed confusion, nostalgic plimsoll squeak, getting lost in Leicester town centre, the wet crinkle of someone else’s leather jacket, watching the shopping channel with the sound off, cumin scented smoke, letting the wind take your breath away, not realising how long you’ve been staring into space, finding an old letter from an old friend, shopping list poems, dreams of drowning, DJ Screw mixtapes left out in the sun.

Crow Versus Crow is honoured to be able to present, A Jar Full, the first set of collaborative recordings from improvising cell0-wranger, Charlie Ulyatt and Dictaphonic tape-jaxxer, Joe Posset.

Charlie and Joe became aware of each other’s work via mentions in the excellent TQ fanzine. When Joe was offered a show in Charlie’s hometown of Nottingham, he asked Charlie along to play a one-off collaboration.

(Improvising cello versus improvising Dictaphone; what could possibly go wrong?!)

Meeting for the first time a few hours before the show, with no previous rehearsal, practice or jam, things seemed to go rather well (CVC ed. - read: ‘blisteringly excellently’). It is this first ever show in Nottingham’s Angel pub that graces Side Two.

With a side of live dicta/cello wonk in the bag, Charlie and Joe spent a few weeks sending sound files back and forth to improvise over. What you hear on Side One is first-take improvisations over each other’s recordings. To keep things fresh, they agreed to not listen in advance but simply set up the recorder, hit play and record the outcome.

(But what will you hear?)

The rich tone of the cello slinks out between gobby horsehair friction and thumb-wrinked ffw action, speedy-jump cuts of smeared tape noise wrestle the gristle of fat wound strings. Sensory grenades explode letting out wafts of classy rosin and hot melting Bakelite. Thoughts and images coalesce into plump wobbling shapes until they are speared with a sharp sonic jab only to deflate with the dignity of a fainting dowager. Cello and Dictaphone flatter each other with audio-compliments and certainly make a handsome pair. The low tones afforded by resonating wood play off the fragile tape magnetics. The scribble-scrabble of the bow lends texture to the foggy Dictaphonix. Two distinct voices singing in drunken unison!

A Jar Full is released as a Limited Edition of 70 professionally-dubbed full-colour on-body printed cassettes, with artwork by Crow Versus Crow full-colour printed onto a hand-numbered j-card, housed in a white-backed cassette case. A digital download is also available.

This record does exactly what it says on the tin: presents unedited performances from three of the No-Audience Underground's finest purveyors of sonic exploration, Posset, Stuart Chalmers and BBBlood, recorded live at Fuse Art Space, in Bradford on Saturday 17th June 2017.

With works descending from, but distinctly separate to, the trio's previous Crow Versus Crow-released split CDR, 'Delirium Cutlet Impaste', Posset spins golden, skittering yarns with his looping, dicta-wonked abstract poetry; Stuart Chalmers constructs throbbing chromatic walls from shimmering, morphing loops; whilst BBBlood conjures spectral landscapes of cut-up place, with pummelling swathes of fizz, hum, scrape and tone.

In an affectionate killing of a sacred cow, and with tongue firmly in cheek, the sleeves of '...Live at Fuse...' allude to the reclamation of territory from what is generally considered a cultural archetype. It has probably been said by somebody somewhere before that it is paramount we document the work of the artists within the No-Audience Underground for cultural posterity, for when they who sleep awake and pay attention, and this record is just that: a document of three open artists and their innovations at the intersection of their respective paths, produced with a firm belief of the cultural significance of the work of these three artists within an Experimental Music™ context.

Would it be hyperbolic to say that this is the immortalising of one of the greatest artistic happenings within recorded history? Possibly. Well, it was 'a good night for the sausages'.

Whether wielding Dictaphone, mobile phone or zither, Posset, BBBlood and Stuart Chalmers, three pillars of the No-Audience Underground, have honed their respective craft over a number of years and an even larger number of innovative and pioneering recordings, released through such esteemed DIY labels as Chocolate Monk, Strange Rules, Singing Knives, Beartown Records, KIKS/Girlfriend, Invisible City, Was Ist Das?... The list goes on!

So, it is an absolute pleasure for Crow Versus Crow to be able to present, Delirium Cutlet Impaste; a three-track three-way split, with BBBlood, Posset and Stuart Chalmers each offering their own slab of rich, evocative, alchemical tape music.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste is a record made from within the socio-political mindfuck that is the UK in 2017.

…The prevalence of so-called ‘alt-right’ (read: fascist) politics; deepening social divisions; an increasingly retrospective, nostalgia-yearning for an England that couldn’t, shouldn’t and, almost certainly, never did exist; a building of cultural walls to the exclusion of various/any cultural others…

This is the climate within which this record has been made.

Yet, this record isn’t a reactionary, condensable to a soundbite, statement piece. It is an open, complex maelstrom of layers of sounds and ideas

…domesticity; poetics in the minutiae of the mundane; field recordings of European excursion; the sounds of various non-Western musics, processed and subsumed; the body as instrument, as conduit…

This record reflects an open-armed engagement with a shifting, tumultuous, uncertain contemporary world. It is a raw, joyful expression of the creative process in, and in spite of, the environment from which it is born.

This collection of new abstract paintings draws into focus the importance of improvisation, spontaneity and process within their respective practices, with both artists placing emphasis upon the traces of the action of making within the complexities, both physical and emotional, of these works on canvas.

Ranging from cut-up plunderphonics to swarmandal improvisations, there's a clear reason Stuart's work has been made available to the world through such hep cats as the Strange Rules, Beartown Invisible City and Was Ist Das? labels.

Continuing on the annual 'Beast Tapes' series, Posset (Chocolate Monk, No Basement Is Deep Enough, Singing |Knives, Crow Versus Crow) has put together a 'beetmix' of sounds culled from his favourite cassette releases of 2015.

In the words of the Eternal Master Himself,

'The working method was totally different this time. All composed on 2 track with the emphasis on sounds connecting from right to left rather than layered on top of each other (like I've done before). The snippets are shorter than normal too...more like breaths than anything. If that makes any sense? All the tapes came into my orbit or were released in 2015. There's a distinct lean towards voices rather than skronk...but I guess that's where my heads been at.'

Although, as it's based on my recent listening habits, it nearly comprised of Wu Tang Clan and 'Don't' by Dinosaur Jr. exclusively, within the first episode of the new year (always different, always the same) there are tracks from older favourites such as The Fall (always different, always the same), Mogwai and Dinosaur Jr.; new releases from numerous newly established UK-based independent/DIY labels, such as Paul Carr/Build Music, Rejections/Reject and Fade and Spirit of John/Gin House Records, to name a few; 'Klassic Trax' that I make no apologies for/feel no need to make justifications for - kwallity iz kwallity, after all; and a specially composed Beast Tapes of 2012 mix from Posset, comprising his selection of cassette-only finery from the last year.

Headphones are definitely recommended. Jumpers too, if it's cold.

Crow Versus Crow and Posset present... 'SEAWEED OF SILK'

I am incredibly pleased to be able to announce the completion of a collaborative project with Newcastle's finest, Posset, in the form of a 20pp A5 black and white zine/3" CDR release. My contribution is a set of photocollages produced in response to Posset's organic, layered Dictaphone 'humps', made up of various field recordings and basic instrumentation produced with aesthetic consideration of earlier Crow Versus Crow visual work.

The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #29

As of this show, the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show will now be presented solely by myself, Andy, after Tom has decided to take a break due to an increasing workload and having to prioritise other commitments. This sucks, but is unavoidable. I had the choice to either abruptly pull the plug on the show or present it solo, and, considering the hard work that has gone in to building the show up to what it is so far, I've decided to soldier on... and, yowzers, was this show a battle?! It will no doubt take a couple of shows to get used to sitting alone in a room talking to a microphone, and the nerves are well on show, but it is, as it always has been, what it is... raw, unscripted drivel in between tracks that I've particularly enjoyed over the last two weeks between the recording of shows.

There is a special Beast Tapes of 2011 mix by Crow Versus Crow regular and collaborator, Posset, in which he presents a seamless mix of excerpts from his personal pick of cassette releases from last year (ripped straight from the tapes themselves). A list of the tracks is included in the show's track list below.

Also, this week's compilation, from which I will be selecting tracks, is mini50 records' After a Long Dream of Sleep, a record released to raise awareness of and funding for Crisis Counselling, a counselling and support service based in Scotland. More information on that project can be found here.
