New Release: Amy Cutler - 'the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants' (CVC021) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Amy Cutler
the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants
(CVC021)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes and digital download

Crow Versus Crow is honoured to present the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants, a new body of work from polymath artist and educator Dr Amy Cutler, available as a limited-edition of fifty cassettes and near-infinite digital download from Friday 14th May 2021.

These recordings spring from a strange medieval English riddle, the Harley lyric, Erthe toc of erthe:

Erthe toc of erthe erthe wyth woh; Erthe other erthe to the erthe droh; Erthe leyde erthe in erthene throh; Tho hevede erthe of erthe erthe ynoh.

(Ms. Harley 2553).

The tiny lament or puzzle is impossible to translate, since in its four short lines the word earth appears twelve times. Like ‘ashes to ashes, dust to dust’, these identical words have different meanings – transitioning between soil, world, burial, cultivation, decay, earthly possessions, and our own bodies. The device of repeating earth so many times in such a short space creates an unsolvable lyric which, riddle-like, ‘only makes sense when we are prepared to hold several meanings of the word in our minds simultaneously’. How does one sing this tiny piece, or give it a tune?

This is an album of sonic variants, settings, and radio covers of Erthe toc of erthe, including those by invited guest artists and friends, Ecka Mordecai, Layla Legard (Hawthonn), Ceylan Hey (Bell Lungs, Mark S. Williamson (Spaceship) and Drew Mulholland. The modified field recordings, chants, twilight hums, nonsense riddles and layered repetitions are each inspired by the variant meanings of ‘earth’, in the ultimate group sonic field trip.

Cutler’s recordings were made in Luds Church, a naturally resonant mossy chasm in Staffordshire where Lollard ceremonies were held, including their alternative death chants. Combining guitar, voice, processed electronics, record hiss, and field recordings, these tracks (and the album as a whole) are each titled with phrases from the dictionary definitions of ‘earth’. Some of these meanings are undigestible by each other, whether scientific, metaphorical, or allegorical: e.g., the ground as a surface on which humans and animals move; the inhabitants of the world collectively; ‘earthing’ a conductive electrical circuit or terminal; to ‘go to earth’ meaning to take refuge as in an animal’s lair or burrow. Combining this mix of opposites – doom and refuge, sin and innocence – and playing on the end of the world-ness of elegy, this camper-van tape release becomes a sort of muted lullaby for earth itself.

the ends (also end) of (the) earth and variants is released as a limited-edition of 50 hand-numbered, professionally dubbed C70 cassettes (made from recycled materials) and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp. The cassette features full-colour artwork by Crow Versus Crow and Dr Amy Cutler.

Tape -  £8

Download - Name Your Price. All proceeds from digital sales will be split between Crow Versus Crow, and will directly (and solely) fund future releases, and the artist.

New Release: Carnivorous Plants - Mammon (CVC015) Limited Edition of 50 CD-Rs & Digital Download

Carnivorous Plants
Mammon
(CVC015)
Limited Edition of 50 CD-Rs & Digital Download

Crow Versus Crow is pleased to announce a new release in, Mammon, the latest work from Carnivorous Plants AKA Owen Chambers, a key member of Bristol’s Liquid Library, and fervent contributor to the No-Audience Underground scene.

Having previously self-released works via his own Carnivorous Plants Bandcamp, through the Liquid Library, the Wormhole World label, and Robert Ridley-Shackleton’s Cardboard Club label, it is an honour to be able to help spread the good word of Carnivorous Plants through Crow Versus Crow.

This release is developed from a bespoke cassette made as part of The Carnivorous Plants Automated Album Delivery Service, in which Owen recorded a pair of unique recordings for 10 people, based on a theme of the individual’s request. I requested a pair of recordings based upon Van Gogh’s Sunflowers series, which, after an email or two of gushing thank-filled praise, became the foundation for the recordings which were expanded upon to become what is now Mammon.

Spanning thirty-three minutes, Mammon is formed of three tracks of heavily textured, delicately layered, glacial-shift guitar drone and feather-light ferric hiss-coated field recordings and lulling piano. Subverting an oft-assumed machismo within the Noise/Drone field, Mammon eschews such negative confrontationality to explore themes of light and colour, producing complex works that reflect a heady mix of existential weight, joyful serenity and a personal transcendence felt during the process of their creation.

If it weren’t a crass, reductionist approach, for ease of reference one could say these recordings sat somewhere between Earth and Eno. *Yeurgh!*

Mammon is released as a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered CD-Rs and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp on Friday 29th November 2019. The physical version is presented as a white-faced, hand-stamped CD-R mounted onto an A5 postcard, featuring artwork by Crow Versus Crow, housed in a recycled plastic sleeve.

New Release: Chlorine - Gallooner (CVC013) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Chlorine
Gallooner
(CVC013)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes & digital download

Crow Versus Crow is honored to be able to present to you Gallooner, by Chlorine – alias of thee mighty Gateshead-based artist and multi-instrumentalist, Graeme Hopper. Following last year’s Loser Herd, released on the Panarus Productions label, Gallooner, digs deeper into the artist’s psyche to construct heavily layered and complex sonic evocations and excavations of the artist’s Self. It is by far the most personal collection of recordings Chlorine has produced to date.

Anxiety. Loneliness. Self-Loathing. Depression.

All hewn crude in catharsis.

That is not to say that Gallooner is a violent, nihilistic, ugly record. As with many creative expressions of melancholy, there is a deep, complicated beauty within the intricate soundscapes. It’s probably a hopeful record. But its seeds are sown deep in frustration and doubt.

Gall.

Bitterness. Bile. Audacity.
A skin sore caused by chronic irritation.
Brazen boldness coupled with impudent assurance and insolence.
Flaw.

And doubt.

With Gallooner, Chlorine has produced six varied yet cohesive soundscapes that range from throbbing, percussive, post-Dub, post-Industrial, post-Techno, sunk ravers, to heavily textured string-scraping, tape-hissing evocations of nocturnal wanderings, both dreamlike and concrete. Found sounds and field recordings coalesce with keys, strings and percussion to form intricate compositions rich in a symbiotic sense of geographic and psychological place.

Gallooner is released as a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered professionally dubbed cassettes and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp on Friday 12th July 2019, featuring artwork by Hopper.

New Release: Penance Stare - Solanaceae (CVC011) Limited Edition Cassette & Digital Download

Penance Stare
Solanaceae
(CVC011)
Limited Edition cassette and digital download

Crow Versus Crow is honoured to be able to present, Solanaceae, the second full-length record from Penance Stare, the Gateshead (UK)-based project of songwriter Esmé Louise Newman. Following the much-lauded Scrying (2018) and House of Bastet EP (2017) cassettes, this bleak and haunted recording captures Penance Stare at its most fully-realised thus far.

Previously known for her work in Melting, Commiserations, and Etai Keshiki, among many others, Esmé has spent the last two years deep in sonic exploration, developing an incredibly rich sound that, “whips together atmospheric black metal with darkwave, shoegaze, stormy ambient, and witch house… as soothing as it is intense” (Kim Kelly, Noisey).

Beautifully mastered by Stephen Bishop (Opal Tapes, Basic House, Drunk in Hell), Solanaceae deals lyrically with themes of trauma, illness, ageing, neglect and regret, and is rendered with a sonic palette of heavy drum machine rhythms, degraded chamber music passages, low fidelity guitar fuzz and blurred out vocals.

With blatant disregard for the oft-perceived sanctity of aesthetic dogma, Penance Stare draws voraciously from a wealth of seemingly disparate musical sources, twisting the gothic ephemeral grandeur of Cocteau Twins, the blunt mass of industrial noise, the layered textural intricacy of ‘Loveless’ and the raw, razor thin brutality of contemporary Black Metal, to form distinctly articulate works of personal expression.

Solanaceae is released as a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered, on-body printed aged bronzed cassettes, housed in a heavyweight recycled card sleeve with full-colour artwork by Crow Versus Crow. A digital download is also available.

New Release: Alocasia Garden - Colony (Crow Versus Crow, 2017)

Alocasia Garden
Colony
Crow Versus Crow
(CVC005)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes & digital download

Order now via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

Crow Versus Crow is incredibly proud to present Colony, the latest release from Alocasia Garden, alias of Folkstone (UK) -based experimental artist Reece Thomas Green.

Startlingly prolific, Colony is Alocasia Garden’s 20th full-length release since the project’s inception in 2014 - following previous cassettes on such esteemed labels as Sacred Tapes, Vanity Pill and Strange Rules.

Written and recorded in June 2016, using contact mics, ride symbol, synth and two 4-track tape recorders, Colony expands upon an established, highly personal aesthetic, specifically exploring more confrontational, harsher textures in stark contrast to experimentations with more open, spacious elements within the delicately layered compositions.

Rooted in the historical lineage of Industrial Noise music, yet eschewing any associated machismo and posturing, with Alocasia Garden, Reece Thomas Green manages to deftly imbue his textured, almost tactile, compositions with a sense of poignancy – a highly emotive, intrinsically human expression extracted from the most inhuman of sources. Piercing screeches and anthropomorphic feedback snarls give way to sustained tones, echoing fizzes and flowing mechanical gurgles, coagulating to evoke dystopian landscapes; battered, collapsed but not hopeless.

Colony is released as a limited edition of 50 professionally dubbed white-shelled cassettes, with full colour labels, wrapped in a full colour extended j-card, housed in a clear plastic case, and digital download.

NEW RELEASE: BBBlood, Posset & Stuart Chalmers - 'delirium cutlet impaste' (Crow Versus Crow Editions)

BBBlood, Posset & Stuart Chalmers
delirium cutlet impaste
Limited edition of 50 CD-Rs and download
Available from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp Friday 14th April 2017

Whether wielding Dictaphone, mobile phone or zither, Posset, BBBlood and Stuart Chalmers, three pillars of the No-Audience Underground, have honed their respective craft over a number of years and an even larger number of innovative and pioneering recordings, released through such esteemed DIY labels as Chocolate Monk, Strange Rules, Singing Knives, Beartown Records, KIKS/Girlfriend, Invisible City, Was Ist Das?... The list goes on!

So, it is an absolute pleasure for Crow Versus Crow to be able to present, Delirium Cutlet Impaste; a three-track three-way split, with BBBlood, Posset and Stuart Chalmers each offering their own slab of rich, evocative, alchemical tape music.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste is a record made from within the socio-political mindfuck that is the UK in 2017.

…The prevalence of so-called ‘alt-right’ (read: fascist) politics; deepening social divisions; an increasingly retrospective, nostalgia-yearning for an England that couldn’t, shouldn’t and, almost certainly, never did exist; a building of cultural walls to the exclusion of various/any cultural others…

This is the climate within which this record has been made.

Yet, this record isn’t a reactionary, condensable to a soundbite, statement piece. It is an open, complex maelstrom of layers of sounds and ideas

…domesticity; poetics in the minutiae of the mundane; field recordings of European excursion; the sounds of various non-Western musics, processed and subsumed; the body as instrument, as conduit…

This record reflects an open-armed engagement with a shifting, tumultuous, uncertain contemporary world. It is a raw, joyful expression of the creative process in, and in spite of, the environment from which it is born.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste will be available from Friday 14th April 2017 as a limited edition of 50 CD-Rs, housed in a full-colour 300gsm ‘greeting card’ sleeve, featuring a collaborative collage produced by BBBlood, Posset, Stuart Chalmers and Crow Versus Crow, in a hand-stamped, numbered and sticker-sealed envelope, and download from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp.

Crow Versus Crow and Sheepscar Light Industrial present...

Crow Versus Crow and Sheepscar Light Industrial proudly present...

PETRELS | AQUA DENTATA | MAX BONDI | BBBLOOD | BEN GAYMER
Saturday 15th September 2012
Wharf Chambers, Leeds
7-11pm

It's a pleasure to be able to work with Sheepscar Light Industrial in putting this event together. Check out their previous and continuing work here.

Petrels (Tartaruga Records / Denovali Records)

'...A deluge of beautiful noise and crushing melody, which ebbs and flows beneath the surface. Utilizing bowed strings, discarded electronics, found percussion and occasional vocals, portentous drone and cascading rhythm.’

Petrels is London-based musician Oliver Barrett (Bleeding Heart Narrative/Grapefruits). Debut album 'Haeligewielle' was released on Tartaruga Records in 2011 and re-issued by Denovali Records in early 2012 on CD and vinyl, combining bowed strings, discarded electronics, sporadic percussion and occasional vocals; "frighteningly claustrophobic but exultant in a beautifully understated way... monstrous arvo part-isms and peter wright destructo-drones. and with similar tropes can come across like richard skelton on steroids." (cowsarejustfood).  Petrels has played shows in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium and Denmark alongside acts such as Nadja, Trouble Books, Geoff Mullen, The Samuel Jackson Five, John Chantler, and Ronin amongst others, and 'Haeligewielle' was nominated for The Liminal's Uranus prize 2011

Aqua Dentata

As Aqua Dentata, Eddie Nuttall (Baraclough) creates sounds with synths, tapes and, according to the blurb at Beartown Records, "bowed miscellany"; sounds to consume and get lost in, be they shimmering and beautiful or throbbing and fizzing...

Max Bondi (Tartaruga Records)

'...An exploration of constraint, limitations, and repetition. Fragments of sound fold in upon themselves, constructing patterns and melodies which overlay, interfere and diverge, varying from dense clusters of pulsing frequencies to torrents of cascading electronic notes.

This is uncompromising machine music, but with a melodic edge, rhythmical but irregular, ‘electrical’ rather than electronic.'

Max Bondi is an electronic musician and owner/founder of Tartaruga Records.  He recently released his second album under his own name - 'Convolution' - on Tartaruga Records, which was an album of the week on Boomkat and Fluid Audio, and picked up further praise from Experimedia ('my personal favourite new listen this week. can't stop listening!'). "A totally fucking incredible record... Masterful in ways that are beyond me... A record this fucking good only comes around once in a long while" (Anti-Gravity Bunny)

BBBlood

Paul Watson, aka BBBlood, is a maestro of noise. Harsh noise. Wandering through his extensive back catalogue, you'll come up against some pretty intense sounds; however, there's a depth and consideration with Paul's approach that soon has you warming to them and reaping the rewards accordingly...

Ben Gaymer

Ben Gaymer is the lead guitarist in Bleeding Heart Narrative and has also played with Brassica, Damo Suzuki, Grapefruits and Minus Two Quartet amongst others.  His debut album will be released on Tartaruga Records later this year.
