The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #124

The 124th episode of The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, recorded at Crow Versus Crow Haus using a Zoom H1 recorder as a microphone and stitched together using outdated software. Please listen to this on headphones.

Following on from Episode 123, this is another show of two halves. The first half comprises of the usual wonky, No-Audience whatever I've been digging of late, from Posset to Sol Rezza, via Moor Mother, Sophie Cooper & Delphine Dora, Jandek, Lost Winter etc etc; whilst the second half is an hour-long mix from West Yorkshire-based sound artist and graphic designer, Anna Peaker, featuring, amongst many others, some seriously excellent cuts from Frans Zwartjes, Stuart Chalmers, Bianca Scout, Ryuichi Sakomoto, Klein, Annea Lockwood, The Caretaker... all gold!

If you are at all interested in the work of the artists featured in this episode, please support the artists and labels through purchasing their records and attending their shows where possible.

The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #119

The 119th episode of The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, recorded at Crow Versus Crow Haus using a Zoom H1 recorder as a microphone and stitched together using outdated software. Please listen to this on headphones.

#119 picks from the previous episode's exploration of Paul Bowles' 'Music of Morocco' box-set before winding itself around the spools of a selection of recent tape-orientated cassette releases from the Falt label; sinks into a heady mire of grimy ecstasies, from Blood Stereo to Klein, via Scottish work songs and golden choral loopings; before Grey Guides hold up a gunked mirror to post-Brexit, undustrial Britain with an exclusive (killer!) mix of sounds from the scraggy edges of post-punk, industrial and weirdo noise.

Tor Fest 'Tape Roast' cassette-only DJ set with Natalia Beylis

As part if this year's Tor Fest, I had the pleasure of collaborating on a DJ set of tape-only cuts with Natalia Beylis (Woven Skull, The Sunken Hum, Divil A'Bit...), improvising our unplanned selections in a 'call-and-response' manner. This was recorded and has aired, warps, pops, hiss, cuts and all, by excellent human Tristan Bath, as part of his Spool's Out show for The Quietus on Resonance 104.4fm.

During our set we featured excerpts, in varying lengths, of:

Recordings produced by Nigel Tucker and Andrew Jones – (Weird & Wonderful Nature Sounds / BBC Wildlife Magazine)
Kink Gong – The Lisu (Excerpt) (The Lisu / Discrepant)

Crow Versus Crow presents Posset's 'Beast Tapes of 2015' Beetmix for The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show

Continuing on the annual 'Beast Tapes' series, Posset (Chocolate Monk, No Basement Is Deep Enough, Singing |Knives, Crow Versus Crow) has put together a 'beetmix' of sounds culled from his favourite cassette releases of 2015.

In the words of the Eternal Master Himself,

'The working method was totally different this time. All composed on 2 track with the emphasis on sounds connecting from right to left rather than layered on top of each other (like I've done before). The snippets are shorter than normal too...more like breaths than anything. If that makes any sense? All the tapes came into my orbit or were released in 2015. There's a distinct lean towards voices rather than skronk...but I guess that's where my heads been at.'

Cassette releases included in the beetmix include:

Max Bentley - Red, Green,Blue (Vitrine)
Human Heads - Triggers (Tranzprocesz)
Robert Ridley Shackleton - The Cardboard Prince (Hissing Frames)
Duncan Harrison - Others Delete God (Reckno)
Unknown Artist - Alright Duckie (Hideous Replica)
Sindre Bjerga - Attractive Amplification (Tutore Burlato)
Tom White - Reconstruction (Alien Passengers)
Fritz Welch - Nothing to Offer (Singing Knives)
Ali Robertson - The Other Week (Giant Tank)
Smashed Cucumber - First Time in Space (SPAM)
Lovely Honkey - Sharp Intake of Breath (Tutore Burlato)
Acrid Lactations - Drizzling Quids a' Crepuscle (Total Vermin)
F.Ampism - The Ancient Wing (Ikuisuus)
Shareholder - Jimmy Shan (Know This)
Depletion - Null Data (Fairfax Industries)
Cannonbone - Live at the Old Police House (No Label)
G.J. de Rook - A & Bla (No Basement is Deep Enough)

This mix originally featured in episode #99 on the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, which originally aired on Sunday 13th March 2016.

Enjoy!

Crow Versus Crow Presents Neil Campbell's 'Domestic Mix for The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show'

Originally broadcast as part of episode #99 of the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show (13th March 2016), Neil Campbell (Vibracathedral Orchestra, Astral Social Club...) presents,

'Seven hours of minidisk recordings of my everyday domestic listening to music, condensed down to half an hour. Sometimes sitting on my arse, more often cooking, cleaning, running around, adding general clatter/chatter to the recordings. Microphone placement and recording levels inconsistent and semi-random throughout. Special collage filter applied to remove most of what has been recorded and position the remaining sounds to move slowly around the stereo spectrum. Live electronics added in response to the collage. Artists featured (that I can recognise/remember): Maurizio Bianchi, Blood Stereo, David Bowie, Andrew Chalk, Gloria Coates, Chvrches, Kevin Drumm, Luke Fowler and Richard Youngs, Vikki Jackman, Joy Division, Olivier Messiaen, Paraselene, Iggy Pop, Ramleh, Erik Satie, Klaus Schulze, Studio Sardena, David Tudor and John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, my own recordings and many random sections of BBC Radio 3.'

Thank you so much to Neil for taking the time and care to make such an interesting, thought-provoking work for the show. Enjoy!

The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #84

The 84th episode of The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, with a specially compiled 'Beast Tapes of 2014' mix from Posset.

Recorded at Crow Versus Crow Haus using a Zoom H1 recorder as a microphone. Stitched together using outdated software. Please listen to this on headphones.

I forgot to use the pop shield on the Zoom when recording this one so there's mucho POP. I also turned Joe's mix up to maximum so there's mucho HISS to bathe in.

'This Is Our Punk Rock...'

'This Is Our Punk Rock...': A Mix by Crow Versus Crow for Basic FM and their TUSK Festival 2013 Broadcast.

This is a 120 minute mix of tracks that I feel represents a small and specific cross-section of the many manifestations of 'Punk Rock' over the last 43 years. All the tracks here give a nod to the 'This is a chord, this is another, this is a third. Now form a band'-mentality in some way or other. Some more than others.

The question of the contemporary significance of Punk Rock, as an idea or an ethos, an approach to functioning within a community and society, is one I am constantly working through. For me, Punk/Punk Rock escapes linguistic and aesthetic definition, which is an intrinsic part of it's existence. It should be fluid, in flux. Maybe that's bloated and maybe I'm romanticising something - maybe it all means shit?! But the records I own and the records I love, the people I have met and the experiences I have shared lead me to believe otherwise.

A massive 'Thank You' to Joe for the opportunity to put these tracks together, and for playing them over the airwaves.
