It's a great pleasure to be able to invite you to the opening of Each Action Informs The Next, an exhibition of visual works by Crow Versus Crow and malorymaki. This collection of new abstract paintings draws into focus the importance of improvisation, spontaneity and process within their respective practices, with both artists placing emphasis upon the traces of the action of making within the complexities, both physical and emotional, of these works on canvas.

As part of Each Action Informs The Next, and perhaps in some way following on from her excellent Count The Days record of last year, Sophie will be performing a newly composed work for trombone. Sophie has released a number of records of both solo and collaborative works, with the likes of Delphine Dora, Tor Invocation Band, on as hip and happening labels as Exotic Pylon, Was Ist Das?, Wild Silence and Rural Colours.

Known for his distinctive tape scree, vocal hump, dictaphone jaxx, Posset (Beartown Records, Chocolate Monk, Singing Knives, Fuckin' Amateurs...), taking the Each Action Informs The Next title as a starting point, will be performing a new work developed specifically for the exhibition.

STUART CHALMERS

One of the most prolific artists of the No-Audience Underground, Stuart Chalmers is responsible for making some of the most essential tape music of the last 6/7 years. Ranging from cut-up plunderphonics to swarmandal improvisations, there's a clear reason Stuart's work has been made available to the world through such hep cats as the Strange Rules, Beartown Invisible City and Was Ist Das? labels.

Jealousy Mountain Duo

Two-man German band Jealousy Mountain Duo's self-titled longplayer was released by experimental German label Blunoise, a perfect portmanteau of Jealousy Mountain Duo's disparate '60s jazz and noisy, math-rock influences. Jealousy Mountain Duo takes a deconstructivist approach to its experimental blend of post-modern jazz and mathy indie rock, its guitars looping looping and conflicting melodies, its drums working in and out of rhythms, eschewing any semblance of straightforward timekeeping for an abstract counterbalance to the swirl of notes and tones. The result is tightly controlled chaos, a sonic maelstrom where form doesn't necessarily follow function. This, truly, is radical stuff. In both senses of the word. — P. Wall

Peter J Taylor
Peter J Taylor is a Composer, Guitarist from the UK, Helping create the founding sounds of Action Beat, he currently composes for multiple guitars. Using extended techniques, custom tunings and adaptive notation, Taylors music explores the harmonies of micro-tonal change in overtones. Making music with both site specific compositions and a touring ensemble, the music is both adaptable and challenging to both the participator and listener.  Taylor can be described sounding in comparison to Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca, Boredoms, and has performed nationally and internationally playing with hundreds of musicians. Nut Club
Nut Club are a trio based in West Yorkshire, formed to investigate and workshop new rhythmic ideas in the context of a pianoless trio. They combine Mandingo/Songhai rhythmic techniques with North Indian classical ideas, and use them to make new Jazz music, and launch pads for free improvisation.

A-Sun Amissa is a project formed out of Leeds, UK by members of Glissando and The Rustle of the Stars. Built on the foundations of the unknown, a project that encompasses minimalist drones, modern-classical movements and avant-garde tendencies. Richard Knox (Glissando / 'The Rustle of the Stars' / Of Thread & Mist) & Angela Chan (Glissando / 'The Rustle of the Stars' / Ten / Tomorrow We Sail) began forming initial ideas in the Autumn of 2011, moving away from the piano-led ambience of previous outputs. Long-time friend Owen Pegg was soon invited to join the project as the pieces developed to enable the songs the depth and intensity they require and more recently Gareth Davis joined, providing bass clarinet. The quartet produce a dense, drone-like atmosphere accompanying evocative, melodic string sections and intertwining guitars. The live show features sections of the recorded output combined with improvisation to unlock new movements and progressions in the music. The subtle, considered textures and the hypnotic interaction between players and instruments provide an intense live performance.

Dean McPhee is a Lancastrian finger-picking electric guitarist now based in West Yorkshire, whose gorgeously liquid, pure-toned playing is supremely evocative of the small splendours and grand transitions of the natural environment. His magnificent debut album proper ‘Son of the Black Peace’ has cemented the reputation won by debut EP Brown Bear.

'...A deluge of beautiful noise and crushing melody, which ebbs and flows beneath the surface. Utilizing bowed strings, discarded electronics, found percussion and occasional vocals, portentous drone and cascading rhythm.’

Petrels is London-based musician Oliver Barrett (Bleeding Heart Narrative/Grapefruits). Debut album 'Haeligewielle' was released on Tartaruga Records in 2011 and re-issued by Denovali Records in early 2012 on CD and vinyl, combining bowed strings, discarded electronics, sporadic percussion and occasional vocals; "frighteningly claustrophobic but exultant in a beautifully understated way... monstrous arvo part-isms and peter wright destructo-drones. and with similar tropes can come across like richard skelton on steroids." (cowsarejustfood).  Petrels has played shows in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium and Denmark alongside acts such as Nadja, Trouble Books, Geoff Mullen, The Samuel Jackson Five, John Chantler, and Ronin amongst others, and 'Haeligewielle' was nominated for The Liminal's Uranus prize 2011

Max Bondi (Tartaruga Records)

'...An exploration of constraint, limitations, and repetition. Fragments of sound fold in upon themselves, constructing patterns and melodies which overlay, interfere and diverge, varying from dense clusters of pulsing frequencies to torrents of cascading electronic notes.

Max Bondi is an electronic musician and owner/founder of Tartaruga Records.  He recently released his second album under his own name - 'Convolution' - on Tartaruga Records, which was an album of the week on Boomkat and Fluid Audio, and picked up further praise from Experimedia ('my personal favourite new listen this week. can't stop listening!'). "A totally fucking incredible record... Ben Gaymer is the lead guitarist in Bleeding Heart Narrative and has also played with Brassica, Damo Suzuki, Grapefruits and Minus Two Quartet amongst others.  His debut album will be released on Tartaruga Records later this year. We're very pleased to have been asked to set up a gig in Halifax for A-Sun-Amissa, ahead of the release of their Desperate In Her Heavy Sleep record on Gizeh Records. They will be joined by fellow Leedsers TEN, whom we've been unsuccessfully trying to set up a gig for, for what is now far, far too long. Trouble With Books, who came to our attention via the brilliant Don't Drop The Dumbells project, will complete the line-up.

Sonically, the night is at the opposite end of the noise-scale to the previous night we held at Bar Up, but that sits just nicely with us...sound is sound after all, and all... and as lovers of live music and residents of Halifax(ish) we're incredibly excited about seeing music of this kind and quality in our home town.

There will be an A5 zine/3"CDr made specially for, and available only at, this gig, featuring Crow Versus Crow visual art work, an illustration by Sean Wars of Trouble With Books, a live recording by Trouble With Books and A-Sun Amissa and Ten remixing a track of each others. It has been printed by Footprints of Leeds, and is being sold at cost price. (Photographs to follow...)

This gig is set up on the same principle, and for the same reasons, as all previous Crow Versus Crow events at Bar Up - entry fee is as little as possible (£4 on the door, unless you are unemployed or can't afford the full amount for socio-economic reasons in which case it is £3...unless that's too much, then just come along and ask us and we'll work something out. £3 advance e-tickets are available here). All money taken on the door will be split between the bands, without Crow Versus Crow taking anything.

Crow Versus Crow have been huge fans of PALE SEAS since hearing an early track, 'Killed By Lions', on Marc Riley's BBC6Music show in early 2011 when they were but one solitary man, Jacob Scott, working under the name Netherlands.

Now expanded to a group, featuring Zeelah Izabella Anstey on vocals and percussion, Matthew Bishop on guitar and keys and Graham Poole on guitar, vocals and keys, PALE SEAS craft timeless organic pop songs that retain the sense of introspective, beaten and broken catharsis that was so prominent within Jacobs initial home recordings.

We are unbelievably pleased that what will be our last Crow Versus Crow presents... night at Bar Up for the foreseeable future will include two of our favourite UK bands, London's Nitkowski and Palehorse, as part of their joint Crushing Inevitability tour. Joining them on the night will be False Flags and Super Luxury, two Leeds-based bands that, judging from the bands' respective demo's that are circling the interweb, will ensure the night is an absolute banger.

The Bar Up date falls in the middle of a set of really important support slots, playing with the likes of ENVY and Take a Worm for a Walk Week.

As of yet, Super Luxury have yet to play live. They're due to play at this year's Brainwash Festival in Leeds, and have a string of dates lined up around the Bar Up date. They're three dudes and a greasy drum machine kickin' out lo-fi stadium rock, with a kind of garagey, Big Black sound.

As always with Crow Versus Crow events, we don't take any cut from the money made on the door (or from the bar, or from anyone else, for that matter!) and all the money will be split between the bands, after we have recovered printing costs, rider etc. If we could have free entry on the night we would do, but touring is expensive and bands have costs to cover, so we simply can't. In a town the size of Halifax, with no established music scene as such, it is difficult for bars to have to confidence to pay the bands upfront and hope to recover that cost, and profit, through drink sale - which we completely understand. So, we are charging as little as possible, and attempting to minimise the dents to our personal bank accounts, and not rip people off. £4 for 4 awesome bands seems fair to us.
