Call for Submissions: Visual and Sound Works: Materials, Process, 'The Landscape'.

I'm currently in the process of organising an exhibition of visual and sound works that relate to 'landscape', however that may be interpreted, comparing the emphasis on 'material' and 'process' in the making of both kinds of works within the 'No-Audience Underground'.

If I can lay a little context...

I have recently been developing a series of paintings that place emphasis on making explicit the process with which they have been made, declaring their own material properties - the paint is definitely paint; the mixing of colours is evident within the layered, heavily textured surface. Although there is nothing illustrated in a figurative sense, the works seem to relate in some way to 'the landscape'. I don't think is necessarily a subconscious thing. I soak up the, often overwhelming, colours, textures, shapes, forms, smells and sounds of my immediate environment and don't doubt my internal recording of this stimulus manifests itself in the paintings.

I always make these works listening to music, often the work of artists loosely collected under Rob Hayler's 'No-Audience Underground' umbrella. This is music that is rich in material properties - tape hiss, static, tones, drones, clicks, scrapes, feedback. It's often a very tactile sound; a minimal music that doesn't hide, nay accentuates, it's method of construction. The use of field recordings is prevalent too - and particularly interesting when considered in relation to the idea of 'the landscape'. I don't necessarily mean this in an overtly Romantic, pastoral way, as recordings of daily existence, urban banalities, documents of the city, are just as interesting. A Brutalist library is as much a part of the landscape as a withering oak.

Whilst working on the paintings, I began to make comparisons between my work and the music, the tactility, the emphasis on material properties, the assumed environmental influences of... and lo! the idea for an exhibition combining the two was born.

There's a lot of visual work being made within the No-Audience Underground, whether that's conventional art objects or visual works that are given a utilitarian purpose, wrapped lovingly around a cassette, CDR or large slab of plastic. Or, works that exist somewhere in between the two. I feel a platform to collect and present these works, and to make explicit the connection to the music produced within the extended No-Audience community, would be a really interesting thing: Presenting visual works in the gallery space along with various No-Audience sound recordings.

So, I'm putting a call out for interested visual artists and musicians, or sound artists, for lack of a non-icky term, who's work relates in some way to 'LANDSCAPE', however that may be interpreted, and places emphasis on PROCESS and MATERIALS.

The exhibition will be held at South Square Gallery, Thornton, Bradford and will take place March through April 2017.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal of works to be exhibited then please email me at crow_versus_crow (at) hotmail (dot) co (dot) uk, including a brief summary of your work and links to relevant examples of work.

Grey Guides - Beast Mask Supremacist (CVC003)

It's an absolute pleasure to be able to present you with Grey Guides' Beast Mask Supremacist, available as a limited edition cassette and digital download via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp.

Available as an edition of 50 cassettes, Beast Mask Supremacist is the third release from Leeds-based duo, Grey Guides, following two self-released CDRs, Back to Mucus and Songs from Grüppen Aleph-Aleph.

With Beast Mask Supremacist, the duo of Lynden St. John (vocals, tapes) and Matt Hurricane-Salt (guitar), accompanied by the presence of spiritual mediator Hogan, disseminate decrepit fragments of an abstract, non-linear narrative revolving around a cast of elusory characters perceptible only on the periphery of consciousness; Glimmers of structures emerge with a sense of uncanny familiarity from the ritualistic drone and ecstatic din, before becoming submerged once again within the complex void; Subliminal transmissions soaked in layers of whirling hiss and magnetic skree. A Burroughsian séance.

'The music staggers along bathed in hiss, echo, and garbled voices, sounding like aging tape recordings of a ritual or séance reassembled into chilling noise transmissions. This music creeps under your skin and deep into the recesses of consciousness. The titles are ace to boot, e.g. ‘Just Burned Down a Care Home’, or ‘Yoo Doo Rite’.'

Spool's Out

'Tuned into the Fortean Times this duo’s reification cacophony of subliminal and subconscious entities – messages from the damned and inter-dimensional – is a most unnerving soundtrack. Imbued in part by early Throbbing Gristle, Blood Stereo, and of course the archdeacon of strange macabre and strung-out visions, William Burroughs, Beast Mask Supremacist is an imaginary (we hope) field recording expedition beyond the ether. Whether they got out alive remains questionable; the found remnants sounding like a battle between complete immersion and total destruction.'

Monolith Cocktail

'Now this well might out weird even those impish chaps the truth about frank in terms of sonic hi-jinks that messes with your head...truly an unnerving and uneasy listening experience all squirelling tape manipulations, hissing howls, white noise terrorphonics and er – primitive chanting and something which we’d have to say and admire, features among the mayhem and melee some of the finest blood lusting wolf howls we’ve heard on a platter since UK Decay’s ‘rising from the dread’. Approach with due care.'

Crow Versus Crow presents Posset's 'Beast Tapes of 2015' Beetmix for The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show

Continuing on the annual 'Beast Tapes' series, Posset (Chocolate Monk, No Basement Is Deep Enough, Singing |Knives, Crow Versus Crow) has put together a 'beetmix' of sounds culled from his favourite cassette releases of 2015.

In the words of the Eternal Master Himself,

'The working method was totally different this time. All composed on 2 track with the emphasis on sounds connecting from right to left rather than layered on top of each other (like I've done before). The snippets are shorter than normal too...more like breaths than anything. If that makes any sense? All the tapes came into my orbit or were released in 2015. There's a distinct lean towards voices rather than skronk...but I guess that's where my heads been at.'

Cassette releases included in the beetmix include:

Max Bentley - Red, Green,Blue (Vitrine)
Human Heads - Triggers (Tranzprocesz)
Robert Ridley Shackleton - The Cardboard Prince (Hissing Frames)
Duncan Harrison - Others Delete God (Reckno)
Unknown Artist - Alright Duckie (Hideous Replica)
Sindre Bjerga - Attractive Amplification (Tutore Burlato)
Tom White - Reconstruction (Alien Passengers)
Fritz Welch - Nothing to Offer (Singing Knives)
Ali Robertson - The Other Week (Giant Tank)
Smashed Cucumber - First Time in Space (SPAM)
Lovely Honkey - Sharp Intake of Breath (Tutore Burlato)
Acrid Lactations - Drizzling Quids a' Crepuscle (Total Vermin)
F.Ampism - The Ancient Wing (Ikuisuus)
Shareholder - Jimmy Shan (Know This)
Depletion - Null Data (Fairfax Industries)
Cannonbone - Live at the Old Police House (No Label)
G.J. de Rook - A & Bla (No Basement is Deep Enough)

This mix originally featured in episode #99 on the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, which originally aired on Sunday 13th March 2016.

Enjoy!

Crow Versus Crow Presents Neil Campbell's 'Domestic Mix for The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show'

Originally broadcast as part of episode #99 of the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show (13th March 2016), Neil Campbell (Vibracathedral Orchestra, Astral Social Club...) presents,

'Seven hours of minidisk recordings of my everyday domestic listening to music, condensed down to half an hour. Sometimes sitting on my arse, more often cooking, cleaning, running around, adding general clatter/chatter to the recordings. Microphone placement and recording levels inconsistent and semi-random throughout. Special collage filter applied to remove most of what has been recorded and position the remaining sounds to move slowly around the stereo spectrum. Live electronics added in response to the collage. Artists featured (that I can recognise/remember): Maurizio Bianchi, Blood Stereo, David Bowie, Andrew Chalk, Gloria Coates, Chvrches, Kevin Drumm, Luke Fowler and Richard Youngs, Vikki Jackman, Joy Division, Olivier Messiaen, Paraselene, Iggy Pop, Ramleh, Erik Satie, Klaus Schulze, Studio Sardena, David Tudor and John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, my own recordings and many random sections of BBC Radio 3.'

Thank you so much to Neil for taking the time and care to make such an interesting, thought-provoking work for the show. Enjoy!

The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #100

The 100th episode of The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show.

If you thought the occasion would be marked by something special you'd be terribly, terribly mistaken. Business as usual for the one hundredth episode - wall-to-wall gold with the minimal ill-informed, poorly considered mumbling in between.

Recorded at Crow Versus Crow Haus using a Zoom H1 recorder as a microphone. Stitched together using outdated software. Please listen to this on headphones.

If you are at all interested in the work of the artists featured in this episode, please support the artists and labels through purchasing their records and attending their shows where possible.

This episode originally aired in a far inferior mono form on 96.7 Phoenix FM (Calderdale) on Sunday 10th April 2016 between 6 and 8pm.

New Release: Melting - Dusk (CVC002) Limited Edition Cassette / Digital

Melting
'Dusk'
(2016)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes / digital
(CVC002)

I'm very pleased to be able to announce a new release through the Crow Versus Crow label, Melting's Dusk
This is the début release from the elusive Leeds producer, who, utilising the sampler as a compositional tool, explores an outsider approach to hip-hop beat craft and bass music. Soaked in an insomniac miasma, heavy sub and glitched-out edits remain anchored by woozy boom-bap rhythms, giving the tracks a complex, ethereal, deeply introspective feel. It's rare that a record so quickly lays such strong hooks in me, prompting intense, repeated listens, but Dusk has done just that. It's an incredibly affecting record. If melancholic ecstasy was a thing, that's exactly what it would provoke.

Dusk will be released as a limited edition cassette with accompanying artwork and sleeve design that, in its intricately designed minimalism, perfectly complements the emotional complexities of the Melting tracks.
The 9 tracks are repeated on both sides of a C65 plain grey, professionally duplicated cassette, wrapped in a 3 panel, full colour j-card in a clear plastic library case. This is then encased in a specifically designed 300gsm black card sleeve, with laser –etched and –cut details.
There cassette release comes in an edition of 50 copies. There will also be a digital version and both will be available from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp from Friday 1st April 2016.

Melting has also released a video for the lead track from Dusk, titled, Road.
