I Am Not A Photographer.

Recently, in preparation for the production of a series of A5 zines (or, a variant of...), I have been out taking a lot of photographs, and have amassed a number that will probably only ever be considered preparatory work. Rather than have these disappear and never be seen by anyone other than myself, I will post a series of sets of photographs over the coming months, with each set showing a particular area of exploration within my work.

The first photographs I will post are taken using a (borrowed) digital SLR camera (a Canon EOS 400d, if that kind of detail is your kind of thing!?). In contrast to the digital collages I have been producing of late, I have set the restriction that there can be no adjustment of the photographs using any software, and the photographs are to be presented 'as is' - mimicking the conditions imposed through analogue photography; well, unless you consider darkroom trickery, which we, erm, won't...

If you want to know anything else about these photographs, then get in touch.

Cheers,

Andy | Crow Versus Crow

A Will Remains in the Ashes...

With 2011 drawing to a mild and indifferent close, I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who has been involved in Crow Versus Crow this year. A huge 'Thank You' to everyone who has contributed to making the seven gigs happen and become what they were; to all the bands and artists who have played to varying numbers of people; and those who have been a part of making up those varying numbers; people who have written reviews of gigs, and people who haven taken photographs at Crow Versus Crow nights...well, for the most part (!); and, to the bars and venues for opening your doors to us.

In a small town without the established support structure of a younger student population, and far too many creatively void glorified glory holes, it has been great to see so many bands and artists pass through Halifax, paired with an increase of young promoters within the town. And with them there is hope...

So, looking towards 2012, there are a number of new Crow Versus Crow projects in the pipeline, including, visual art exhibitions in both Halifax and Leeds; a series of very limited edition thematically linked A5 zines; a split A5 zine/3"cdr in collaboration with Posset; an incredibly exciting 'all-dayer' in July, and, of course, the odd gig here and there. Stay chewned...

Fanks you guys!

After technical errors with the recording process during a number of live broadcasts, as promised, we have pre-recorded the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show for the very first time. The show was still recorded 'live', in one take, with no overdubs or corrections of factual errors and blantant idiocy. Hopefully, the podcast presented here will be of a quality high enough to give a fair representation of the music featured (192kbps), whilst not quite being good enough to edit out the songs 'for keeps'. Crow Versus Crow presents... #8

We are unbelievably pleased that what will be our last Crow Versus Crow presents... night at Bar Up for the foreseeable future will include two of our favourite UK bands, London's Nitkowski and Palehorse, as part of their joint Crushing Inevitability tour. Joining them on the night will be False Flags and Super Luxury, two Leeds-based bands that, judging from the bands' respective demo's that are circling the interweb, will ensure the night is an absolute banger.

Palehorse.

Palehorse
Shit Columbo
'Soft as Butter, Hard as Ice'
(2011)

Mixing elements of grindcore, hardcore, post-rock, noise, sludge and handclaps (YUP!) into a cohesive, groove heavy sound, Palehorse are a 5 piece, dual bass, dual vocalled monster!

Nitkowski

Nitkowski
Strike the Last Flare
'Stay in the Home You Love'
(2011)

Incredibly intricate and complex song structures that combine elements of contemporary hardcore, math- and noise-rock, and dual 'spoken/bellowed' vocals that span the trajectory between The Fall and Botch. A new album, Stay in the Home You Love, is to be released on Function Records, and the word on the street (or, the Function newsletter) is that copies will be available to grab at the dates on this tour.

False Flags

False Flags
Namedropper (live)
Unreleased
(2011)

I, along with an army of others I don't doubt, am eagerly awaiting the first release from Leeds' False Flags. Real heavy slabs of hardcore in the vein of Botch. The Bar Up date falls in the middle of a set of really important support slots, playing with the likes of ENVY and Take a Worm for a Walk Week.

Super Luxury

Milk Sauce by Super Luxury

(2011)

As of yet, Super Luxury have yet to play live. They're due to play at this year's Brainwash Festival in Leeds, and have a string of dates lined up around the Bar Up date. They're three dudes and a greasy drum machine kickin' out lo-fi stadium rock, with a kind of garagey, Big Black sound.

http://superluxuryofficial.blogspot.com/

As always with Crow Versus Crow events, we don't take any cut from the money made on the door (or from the bar, or from anyone else, for that matter!) and all the money will be split between the bands, after we have recovered printing costs, rider etc. If we could have free entry on the night we would do, but touring is expensive and bands have costs to cover, so we simply can't. In a town the size of Halifax, with no established music scene as such, it is difficult for bars to have to confidence to pay the bands upfront and hope to recover that cost, and profit, through drink sale - which we completely understand. So, we are charging as little as possible, and attempting to minimise the dents to our personal bank accounts, and not rip people off. £4 for 4 awesome bands seems fair to us.

Thanks for reading this, and we hope to see you down on the 27th. Come say 'Hello'!

Crow Versus Crow presents UNITED FRUIT | THEE CUSS WORDS | HORSES | Bar Up, Halifax | 10th September 2011

A massive thank you to everybody involved in making this night what it was; to all the people who came down to support Crow Versus Crow, the bands and DIY music in Halifax - we're seriously grateful to you all; to everyone at Bar Up; to Horses for their Stapleton tee (Matt), incredibly powerful moustache (Adam) and all round good vibes; to Thee Cuss Words for their superior taste in Post-Trousers Polaroid Photographs and all round good vibes; and to United Fruit for being super, super nice guys, playing a cracking set involving a dismantled drum kit and 10+ drummers and all round good vibes.

United Fruit were filming throughout the night, compiling tour footage towards a documentary, erm, documenting to realities of DIY touring, so hopefully one or two pretty Fax faces will make an appearance.

...excellent vibes.

Nice Words from Friends

Andy Elizabeth McNope-Tank has written some nice things about our work on a new blog, Bradford Music Chap, set up to cover musical goings on in the Bradford area.

Although it's currently in it's infancy, the blog will no doubt be a great resource for people looking for reviews, news and listings of DIY events in said part of West Yorkshire area. We at Crow Towers are incredibly supportive of projects such as this which help to link various projects, and encourage a sense of community, in what is a relatively small area with a high proportion of culturally relevant, ethical happenings.

Big thanks go to Andy Abbott for giving us a nod.

UNITED FRUIT | THEE CUSS WORDS | HORSES, Bar Up, Halifax, 10/09/11

Just a quick reminder that the UNITED FRUIT | THEE CUSS WORDS | HORSES gig at Bar Up, Halifax is just shy of a week away - taking place on Saturday 10th September. It's a snip at £4 on the door, with all the proceeds going straight to the bands once we've recovered our meagre expenses (printing costs, sound guy, rider).

Here's a live clip of Horses playing one of their Billy Childish-ish, archetypal pop tunes, 'Kill Me Now' earlier this year...

...and part of the Cuss Words song, 'Fascinator' recorded live at The Harley in Sheffield...

...and finally, United Fruit's big rock, early Manics meets Sonic Youth vibes 'Kamikaze'...

...to whet one's whistle.

The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #12

...Again with the 'mono'.

Unfortunately, the Myriad system crashed whilst recording the show, so once again this podcast is in 'mono'. Hopefully this won't mar the quality of the tracks too much, and you will be able to pick out some gems from the list of tracks that you can may not have heard already and discover a new favourite band for the week!
AND, if you think of this show as the audio equivalent of an A5 b&w photocopied zine, then it gives it a certain charm...no...?

If you like any of the records you hear please support the artist by purchasing records, going to their gigs (where 'not dead' is applicable) and/or telling your friends about them.

Hopefully, there are some audible gems buried within the technical malfunctions and presentorial ineptitude...

If you enjoy any of the tracks played here please support the artists by buying their records and going to their live shows.

Despite opinions on the political (or, non-) motivations of the riots, the destruction of the Sony/PIAS distribution centre is a devastating blow for many solid UK independent record labels, including Rock Action, Rough Trade, Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar/Dead Oceans, Warp and many, many more smaller less financially 'stable' labels.

Crow Versus Crow presents... #7

Crow Versus Crow presents...
United Fruit | Thee Cuss Words | Horses
Saturday 10th September 2011

Crow Versus Crow are very proud to present, for the seventh in the '...presents...' series of events at Bar Up,  HORSES, THEE CUSS WORDS and UNITED FRUIT.

Horses.

Fuzzed-out, no-guff rock'n'roll in the vein of Japanther, Coachwhips, Thee Oh Sees, Spector's early Crystals/Ronettes hits, yadda, yadda, yadda...
Darryl Peat EP was released on cassette by Manchester label Bright // Tomorrow earlier this year (BUY IT!). A digital version of the EP is being given away for free here.

Thee Cuss Words.

You know the score...

United Fruit.

Peddling discordant, melodic, BIG rawk that smells a bit like Shellac, Mcklusky, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Sonic Youth... Glasgow's United Fruit join us on their second stint spreading the good word about the band's debut, self-released, album Fault Lines. Listen and purchase here.

Along with awesome bands, you can expect CVC visuals and music continuing until 2am. Trains run towards both Manchester and Leeds until way past the live music curfew (11pm), so there isn't an excuse not to come. Not one! All proceeds from the night will go directly to the bands, and as always we've made the fee on the door as cheap as we possibly can, whilst hoping to cover our expenses. Come support a developing DIY live music scene - a gosh darn good cause, if ever I heard of one.

Fear of DIY

Writing anything about anything on the internet seems kind of redundant when you can post a link to it (like this one...here) and a reader would be able to find out as much about said 'thing' as I know, and more than I could tell you here.

Regardless, I want to draw attention to a live recording/online archive project called Fear of DIY, initiated earlier this year by Sam Walker and Andrew Sidney Chambi.

Fear of DIY has so far recorded live performances by Illness and Silent Front, two incredible UK bands, which can be streamed and downloaded for free, for keeps, here. More recordings are soon to be uploaded, including Shield Your Eyes and other such delights.

Previously, we've played tracks from the Fear of DIY sessions on the Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, and will continue to do so for as long as we're allowed... 'cos they're awesome.

Online archives and recording projects of this nature are a really important tool with which to document grassroots practice from scenes, cultures and subcultures that perhaps get little, or no, and certainly not enough, media attention and documentation.

('Scene' in this context is meant to be read without the weighty negative connotations of scenester scenes, rather, as a healthy network or constellation of like-minded individuals, often stretching beyond geographical limitations.)
